Why Sleep Apnea Tests Are Significant

August 26, 2010 | Comments (0)

Sleep apnea is a condition that should be taken seriously.  Although it may be taken as much worse a condition than snoring, it is actually an ailment that can be deadly. Sleep apnea does not just create those annoying sounds which can be identified as snoring. This is not just a problem of the person sleeping beside someone with sleep apnea. The more serious side of it is that it prevents someone from breathing normally while asleep. Therefore, it is actually the problem of the sleeper itself, one that can deprive him of air and, ultimately life.

This is why people who feel they suffer from sleep apnea must right away undergo a sleep apnea test. It is through this test that doctors or sleep experts will be able to find out if the person is really suffering with such condition. When the sleep apnea test indicates positive results, the physician will need to prescribe some oral medications. However, other means must also be applied to fight off sleep apnea. A doctor can also recommend the use of specific devices like the CPAP to encourage normal breathing while asleep. Besides the CPAP there are a lot of other contraptions that can be worn or inserted in the mouth for normal breathing.

One common sleep apnea test is the nocturnal polysomnography. With this kind of evaluation, particular types of equipment are attached to the patient while he is in his sleep. This machine lets the doctor monitor the functions of the lungs and heart of the person.  The breathing pattern is also observed as well as the movements of the legs and arms.  Some more advanced models of this machien even allow the doctors to observe the mental activity that takes place as the person sleeps. A sleep apnea test that can be done at home by the patient himself is through the use of portable monitoring devices. By such devices, the patient may also check his very own heart rate, breathing pattern and level of blood oxygen. However, not at all times that these devices may be able to figure out sleep apnea. Aside from this, it would still be a need to visit the doctor and have a nocturnal polysomnography.
